The Chair of Factory Automation and Production Systems (FAPS), FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg,
is looking for motivated students to contribute to our work for the Robotik Challenge 2026.
Our doctoral team has already built and validated major parts of a demonstrator system
(our winning contribution in 2025 can be seen here). For the new challenge, this setup will be further developed and adapted (Please find this year’s challenge here).
We now invite students to take ownership of selected work packages in a
Master’s thesis or project thesis.
Your Opportunity
You will work on an industrially relevant robotics application and help bridge research and real-world implementation.
The exact scope will be defined together with you based on your interests and background.
Possible Focus Areas (open to your ideas)
- Extension and adaptation of an existing robotic assembly setup
- Process chain design and optimization for robust, repeatable execution
- Perception, handling, and fixture concepts for flexible components
- Control/software integration and workflow orchestration
- Digitalization-oriented concepts (e.g., data flow, traceability, interface ideas)
- Evaluation of solution concepts with respect to feasibility, scalability, and transferability
Note: The list is intentionally non-exhaustive. We explicitly welcome your own technical ideas and
creative solution approaches.
Your Profile
- Student in mechanical engineering, mechatronics, robotics, computer science, or related fields
- Interest in robotics, automation, and hands-on system development
- Structured and independent way of working
- Programming/CAD/controls experience is helpful, but not mandatory
What We Offer
- Direct supervision by an experienced doctoral team
- Access to an existing hardware/software setup and lab infrastructure
- High practical relevance with strong research and industry context
- Freedom to shape your own technical contribution
- Possibility to continue in follow-up research activities
Organizational Details
- Format: Master’s thesis or project study
- Start date: as soon as possible
- Language: English or German (as agreed)
